Into the forest with Greenie

I’ve worked with Greenie before, and shared my editing process in a post previously. Recently, I had the opportunity to work with her again, and we decided to check out a new location. It’s always a good idea to check out a new location, but that isn’t what I did.

I flew into this photo shoot blind, relying only on GPS to get us there, and some aimless wondering around until the right light, backgrounds, and and compositional elements all came together.

This post is the outcome of all of that.

For those of you in South Australia, you might recognise the location. This was captured within Mt Crawford National Forest, using a combination of flash and natural light. As I’ve indicated on my blog many hundreds of times (at least it feels that way) – I absolutely adore using flash on location as you get high quality images which make the person you’re photographing pop, as well as filling in foreground shadows.

Greenie has fantastic eyes for a portrait subject, they absolutely glow when they catch the light. There was an incident with some attacking butterflies while we wondered through the location, but that didn’t mean that there wasn’t time to take a rest.

Some younger plants allowed a more green scene, and as goes with her name, Greenie was more than happy to become somewhat entangled in the leaves and branches. They left their mark, as did the glitter from her dress in my car.

The light in this particular spot was really good, and there’s no real secret to how this next image was produced – a beauty dish in a small, portable softbox, and off camera flash – with a grid, leading to this moment being captured.
